They do not modestly lie at the feet of the doctrine, as the Haggadah lies at the feet of the Halakah. But it is their misery and their beauty that they had to become more than parables. Kafka’s writings are by their nature parables. Kafka’s real genius was that he tried something entirely new: he sacrificed truth for the sake of clinging to its transmissibility, its haggadic element. (It is also to denude Dante of his strangeness, but that’s an argument for another day.) Closer to the mark than the Dante comparison is Walter Benjamin’s contention, from the shorter of his two essays on Kafka collected in Illuminations: To say this, however, is to denude Kafka of his strangeness. Hence critics’ easy recourse to finding in his fiction crystallizations of Kierkegaard, Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche, and Freud, just as Dante is supposed to be Aquinas versified. If he did not solely intend to say that Kafka’s work narrates a journey through hell, he also meant that Kafka sums up-but in concrete images rather than axioms and scholia-modernity’s art and thought. Auden referred to Kafka as the Dante of the modern age. Selected Short Stories of Franz Kafka by Franz Kafka ![]()

As the erstwhile arch enemies join forces to squelch a power-hungry pixie's coup attempt in one world and to rescue Artemis's long-missing father in another (he's being held for ransom by the Russian Mafiya), the boy proves he has a heart after all, even as he builds his reputation as a world-class criminal mastermind. Simply catching glimpses of this creepy cover made me uncomfortable before I had even started reading it. Over the course of one evening and 124 pages, this risen-from-the-dead bride resurfaces as she looks for her next victim. According to its lore, it houses the remains of a bride who was asked to be buried alive there when her husband-to-be never made it home for their wedding, and each year, a new girl has to be buried alive in the walls and sacrificed to the house to keep this bride happy. Apparently the bride Talia had always wanted this spooky experience to be a part of her marriage to Faiz, so she revels in the creepy past of the house. ![]() The wealthy ‘golden boy’ of the group Philip, paid for everyone to fly there and arranged the rental of this supposedly haunted property. Just looking at this frightening cover (which I had to put facedown on my nightstand, because I couldn’t stand the sight of it) gives one a sense of how scary this book truly is. Edward Garnett, a reader for Duckworth, Lawrence's publisher, cut about 10 percent of the material from Lawrence's draft. The novel was controversial when it was published because of its frank way of addressing sex and its obvious oedipal overtones. Morel tries to find meaning in her life and emotional fulfillment through her bond with Paul, Paul seeks to break free of his mother through developing relationships with other women. The story recounts the coming of age of Paul Morel, the second son of Gertrude Morel and her hard-drinking, working-class husband, Walter Morel, who made his living as a miner. Many of the details of the novel's plot are based on Lawrence's own life and, unlike his subsequent novels, this one is relatively straightforward in its descriptions and action. It was his first successful novel and arguably his most popular. ![]() Initially titled "Paul Morel," Sons and Lovers, published in 1913, is D. ![]() ![]() One of the things I liked most about the book was its personal approach, using the perspectives of female "inmates" themselves, and fiction excerpts from a variety of authors, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Sylvia Plath, Charlotte Bronte, Doris Lessing, and others to highlight women's mental health issues and experiences with doctors and provide an insight into the culture and period. I read this book from cover to cover and would have been very happy if it were a school text. It examines cultural expectations about how women should behave and how these male perceptions affected the diagnosis and treatment of women’s mental health problems. Elaine Showalter’s The Female Malady: Women, Madness, and English Culture, 1830-1980 is a very informative, very accessible, and very disturbing look at how “insanity” was treated from 1830 to 1980. ![]() ![]() Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. 132 b/w images Originally published with title: I shock myself: the autobiography of Beatrice Wood.
